When the Body Is Out of Alignment: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
When the Body Is Out of Alignment: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
One of my favorite things about these conversations is getting to highlight local businesses that are helping people feel better in real, practical ways. I recently had the chance to sit down with Dr. Lauren Baker of New Leaf Chiropractic, and our conversation was a great reminder that chiropractic care is about much more than a quick adjustment.
Dr. Baker’s office is located in the front of Kingwood, off the 59 feeder, right next door to Axe-Mania and Cowboy Surfer. What stands out about her practice is how thorough her approach is.

If you have never been to a chiropractor before, or if you have only thought of chiropractic as “getting your back popped,” there is a lot more to understand.
Chiropractic is More Than “the Pop”
Dr. Baker describes herself as a Type A, analytical person, and honestly, that comes through in the best way. She is thorough. Instead of simply putting someone on the table and starting an adjustment, she focuses on figuring out what is actually happening in the body first.
At her office, that includes a three-part nerve test designed to analyze what may be affecting a person’s health. If needed, she may also recommend imaging such as X-rays or an MRI.
That level of evaluation matters, especially for people who are nervous about chiropractic care or who are trying it for the first time. Her goal is not to guess. It is to understand the root of the problem.
Word of the Day = Neuroplasticity
As she explained, chiropractic care is not about the sound or sensation of an adjustment. The real goal is supporting the nervous system and improving what she referred to as neuroplasticity, which she described in simple terms as helping the nerves stay free and loose enough to do their job well.

What Signs Should You Pay Attention To?
Most people wait until they are in obvious pain before they seek help. Pain definitely matters, but Dr. Baker pointed out that it is often just one of the body’s warning signals.
Some of the signs she says people should not ignore include:
- Frequent headaches
- Stiffness
- Difficulty moving comfortably
- Trouble getting in and out of the car
- Difficulty getting out of bed
One point she made really caught my attention: the average person should only have two headaches a year. Not two a month. Two a year.
That is the kind of statement that makes you pause and rethink what you may have normalized. A lot of people are used to powering through headaches, stiffness, and recurring discomfort without realizing their body is trying to tell them something.
"Your body speaks through symptoms."
Her perspective is simple. Your body speaks through symptoms. Pain is not always something to ignore or just manage temporarily. Sometimes it is a message that something is out of alignment and needs attention.
If You’re Nervous About an Adjustment, Here’s What to Know
This part of our conversation was especially reassuring.
For people who are hesitant about going to a chiropractor, Dr. Baker shared that patients are not adjusted on the first day in her office. That alone can take a lot of pressure off.
Instead, the first step is learning what is going on. That may include:
- A consultation
- A three-part nerve scan
- Referral for X-ray or MRI, if needed
That process is designed to answer important questions:
- What is causing the problem?
- Where is the stress or misalignment coming from?
- What is the safest and most effective way to help?

For anyone feeling uncertain, this is a helpful reminder that good care starts with understanding, not rushing.
How Chronic Ear Infections in a Two-Year-Old Patient Subsided
When I asked Dr. Baker about the most memorable transformation she has seen, she shared a story that really stayed with me.
A mother brought in her two-year-old daughter, who had already experienced 12 ear infections. At that point, tubes were about to be placed in the child’s ears, and the mother wanted to explore another option first.
After chiropractic care and just four adjustments, the ear infection cleared. Even more remarkable, the mother reported two years later that the child remained free of infections.
According to Dr. Baker, chiropractic care focuses on the movement of the vertebrae. In children, birth trauma or other issues can contribute to misalignments, especially in the neck. Addressing those misalignments may help relieve stress on the body in ways that many people do not immediately associate with chiropractic.

That is what made this example so compelling. Most people think of chiropractic in relation to back pain, neck pain, or headaches. Ear infections are not usually the first thing that comes to mind.
And yet that was exactly her point.
It Can Help With More Than You Think
One of Dr. Baker’s patients summed it up perfectly when she asked what people should know about chiropractic care:
It works on things you didn’t know it would work on, and you don’t have to suffer with the pain that you’ve had because you don’t know how bad it is until it’s gone.
That is a powerful statement because it reflects something many people experience. When pain or stiffness becomes part of your routine, you can start to treat it as normal. You adapt. You compensate. You stop expecting to feel better.
Then once the issue improves, you realize just how much it had been affecting your daily life.
This does not mean every health issue is solved the same way, and Dr. Baker’s approach makes that clear. Her focus is on assessing each person carefully, identifying the root cause where possible, and supporting better function through chiropractic care.
Why This Matters
What I appreciated most in my conversation with Dr. Lauren Baker was how grounded her approach is. She combines a detailed, analytical process with a genuine desire to help people get answers.
If you are dealing with:
- More headaches than you think you should have
- Movement that feels restricted or painful
- Stiffness that is affecting your day
- Ongoing discomfort you have simply gotten used to
it may be time to stop brushing it off.
The body has ways of signaling that something is wrong. Paying attention to pain, discomfort and warning signs can make a real difference.
A Valuable Resource in Our Community
I love getting to spotlight businesses that serve our community in meaningful ways, and New Leaf Chiropractic is one of those resources. Dr. Baker is clearly passionate about helping people feel better, move better, and understand what their bodies are telling them.
Sometimes the biggest takeaway is also the simplest one: you do not have to keep living with pain just because it has been there for a while.
That is a message worth hearing.
