The Mysterious Man Behind the Camera

The Mysterious Man Behind the Camera

Most people know Tyler Jones as the one carrying a camera at chamber events, catching photos, moving quietly in the background, and somehow always being exactly where he needs to be. But his role goes much further than photography.

As Director of Communications, Tyler helps shape how our chamber looks, sounds, and stays connected. That includes the emails members receive, the reminders that keep events on the calendar, the branding people recognize, and the newsletter that ties everything together.

What the Director of Communications actually does

Photography is certainly a big part of the job. If Tyler is out in the community, there is a good chance a camera is coming with him. But the bigger picture is communication itself.

His work includes gathering updates from members and making sure those updates reach other members in a useful way. It also means sending e-blasts, organizing weekly event reminders, and keeping chamber information moving so opportunities do not get missed.

One of the biggest pieces of that work is our weekly newsletter, Tyler's Weekly Briefing (formerly Chamber Connections). That publication serves as a regular touchpoint for what is happening across the chamber, and it is continuing to evolve.

Refreshing the chamber's brand

One of the most noticeable changes Tyler has helped bring to the chamber is our branding. The goal was to create something that looked distinct, modern, and unmistakably ours.

The old logo created some confusion. It had elements that made it feel more like a city seal or a government office than a business organization focused on connection and growth. It did not clearly reflect who we are.

The newer logo changes that completely. Tyler designed it himself, drawing it digitally by hand. More importantly, the design reflects what makes this area unique.

It points to the crossing highways that define our region and reinforce the idea that this is the hub of opportunity. That phrase is not just a slogan. It connects directly to the landscape and identity of our community.

Why Tyler's Weekly Briefing matters

Tyler's Weekly Briefing is not something to skim past. It is one of the most practical tools members have.

Its purpose is simple. It helps members know what is coming up, what deserves space on the calendar, and where they can get more involved. That kind of communication matters because chamber membership only becomes valuable when people know how to use it.

The updated version of the weekly newsletter is moving toward a more concise format, but brief does not mean less useful. It means easier to read and easier to act on.

When it is working well, the newsletter helps members:

  • See upcoming chamber events before they sneak up
  • Spot opportunities to engage and build relationships
  • Stay aware of what other members are doing
  • Get the most out of their membership

How Tyler's Weekly Briefing helps members connect

Connection is one of the biggest reasons the newsletter matters. It is not just an event list.

It also highlights new members from the last 30 days, recognizes renewals from the previous month, and shares member events. That makes it easier for businesses and organizations to discover one another, support one another, and keep up with the momentum happening inside the chamber.

If someone is new, it offers a way to get familiar with the community. If someone has been involved for years, it still creates fresh touchpoints and reminds them where new relationships may be forming.

Why communication is essential for chamber value

Good communication is what makes a chamber feel active instead of distant.

If members do not know what is going on, they cannot benefit from the opportunities in front of them. Just as important, they also cannot see where they might contribute. Communication works in both directions. It helps people receive value, and it helps them add value too.

That is a major part of what Tyler's role supports. He is not simply sending information out. He is helping create a more informed and connected membership base.

Do not rely on showing up at the last minute

One practical point came through loud and clear. Registration matters.

It can be tempting to glance at the calendar, see a luncheon or breakfast, and assume there will be room. But many chamber events are filling up quickly. Popular gatherings like luncheons and breakfasts with the Great 88 often reach capacity.

Registering ahead of time helps the chamber prepare properly and helps ensure there is actually a seat waiting for you.

That is one more reason communication has to be timely and consistent. Weekly reminders and regular updates are not just nice extras. They help members plan ahead and avoid missing out.

The real work behind the camera

It is easy to reduce a communications role to the most visible piece of it. In Tyler's case, that visible piece is often a camera. But the heart of the job is much broader.

It is brand identity. It is clarity. It is making sure members know what is available to them. It is helping people connect with the chamber and with each other in ways that are useful, timely, and easy to act on.

That behind the scenes work is often the reason everything else feels seamless.

Stay engaged and stay informed

If you want to make the most of chamber membership, pay attention to the communication channels that are already working for you. Read Tyler's Weekly Briefing. Look ahead at upcoming events. Register early. Notice the new members. Support member events. Keep up with updates across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

The more informed you are, the more connected you become. And the more connected you become, the easier it is to keep adding value and making a difference.
