Take 5 With Tracie featuring Dora Betancourt of Texas Mounted Patrol Security

I'm Tracie Kamenoff, and in this short conversation presented by Community Impact I sat down with Dora Betancourt of Texas Mounted Patrol Security to hear how a horseback-based private security company came to be — and the challenges and encouragement that shaped that journey.

What is Texas Mounted Patrol Security?

Dora explained it simply: Texas Mounted Patrol Security is a private security company based on horseback. Their officers patrol shopping centers and special events on horseback, offering a visible, approachable presence that helps deter trouble and connect with community members.

Dora has nearly 14 years in the security industry. She built a strong foundation working for another company before the idea to start her own operation came from a friend. At first it felt like a “crazy idea,” but the more she thought about it, the more it made sense — and she decided to take the leap.

"After a few years of working for them a good friend of mine suggested that I start my own security company... the more I thought about it the more that it makes sense."

Why the Chamber Mattered

Dora joined the chamber to help grow her business, and one of her first memories is walking into the chamber office and being greeted by Miss Bobby and her "beautiful smile." That welcome mattered — it made Dora feel accepted from the start.

For Dora, the chamber wasn't just a networking group; it became a resource that helped her build confidence in the business world. She shared that the chamber treats everyone equally, whether they represent a small business or a large corporation. That inclusive culture gave her the support she needed to move forward.

"One of the big things that I love about the chamber is they treat everybody the same... They want everyone to feel welcome."

Challenges as a Business Owner — and How She Overcame Them

Like many entrepreneurs, Dora faced self-doubt. One of her biggest challenges was not feeling confident in the business world. When insecurity hit, she turned to chamber staff and members for encouragement.

She recalled calling and texting chamber staff when she felt out of place in meetings. One staff member, Sherry, encouraged her with a simple but powerful message: be yourself. A speaker at a ladies’ lunch shared a business origin story that mirrored Dora’s own struggles — and that connection reminded her she wasn't alone.

"Anytime that I felt insecure... I text and call one of your people and... she say no you have to be yourself."

Practical Takeaways and Advice

  • Lean on community organizations: Membership in groups like the chamber can offer mentorship, confidence-building, and practical resources.
  • Accept help and encouragement: When you feel out of place, reach out — others have felt the same way and can help you move forward.
  • Be yourself: Authenticity resonates and opens doors; it’s often what helps small businesses connect and grow.
  • Trust your experience: Years in the field gave Dora the confidence and foundation she needed to start her own company.

Closing Thoughts

Talking with Dora reminded me how much community and simple encouragement matter to entrepreneurs. A welcoming smile, a supportive staff member, or a relatable speaker can all be the difference between hesitation and action.
